Club Rides and Meetings

Degree of Difficulty - Ratings are based on the Utah State difficulty ratings. Trail conditions are always subject to change due to the weather and other acts of nature.

Easiest - A road/trail wide enough for two vehicles to pass, has good sight distance, and presents little or no trouble for novice riders to negotiate.

More Difficult - A road/trail where a moderate rider might experience turns with limited sight distance, moderately steep sections, rocks and ruts.

Most Difficult - A trail or very primitive two track where better riders will experience steep, rough and narrow segments, often with switchbacks, that will require a full array of riding skills to negotiate.

Training
It is a Utah State law that everyone from age 8-15 complete a certification class to ride legally. Training is available through the UT/AZ ATV Club. Classes are held at the Kaneplex (rodeo arena) facility in Kanab once each month. Class is up to four hours long. Each person taking the class will need to provide their own machine (size appropriate for the age of the person), a helmet, gloves, long sleeve shirt, long pants, ankle high boots and eye protection. Cost of the class is $10 per person. To register for class contact the Utah State Parks and Recreation.

The UT/AZ ATV Club successfully completed its first OHV Certification class on Wednesday, April 13th.

Three students participated in the certification class by first registering with Utah Parks and Recreation. They received pre-training materials to study and were given instructions on what to bring to the class including their ATVs.

Upon arrival at the Kaneplex in Kanab, each student was checked to make sure they had the proper safety gear, their ATV was checked to make sure it was appropriate for their age and size, and registered with Utah DMV. Once everyone was approved to continue, they were given a 50 question written test consisting of True/False and Multiple Choice. The tests were scored, with everyone passing, to go on to the education/skill training portion of the class.

There were 17 education/skill sections presented to improve participant’s knowledge and abilities when riding ATV’s. Education sections included discussion about protecting the environment, trash in/trash out, proper safety gear and staying on the trails. Skill sections included obstacles, quick turning, emergency braking, and how to ride on steep hills.

The UT/AZ ATV Club now has three Certified Instructors, Robert Aiken, Janet Smith and Sam Smith. They will volunteer their time once each month to train ATV owners to become certified riders. It is a Utah State law that everyone from age 8-16 completes a certification class to ride legally. The UT/AZ ATV Club hopes that parents and especially their children will become better educated and better riders.
